One of the questions I always ask before coming up with a game plan to overcome unwanted behaviors is what does the dog's exercise schedule looks like. Quite often, people will say that their dog spends time outside in the backyard, thinking that this is just as fulfilling as walking their dog. Many will then even try to explain that their yard is big, thinking that the larger space should be enough for the dogs to run around and drain their energy by themselves. I vividly remember going to the Hamptons to help a very well-known celebrity, a mega-star, who had over 3 acres of fenced-in property. Her dogs had broken out of the fence and bit a neighbor. She didn't understand why they would do that given the expansive property they had. I asked how often they were walked. She said never. I explained that this multi-million dollar, gorgeous property had become like a prison yard to her dogs. The same sights, sounds, and smells, day after day. They were bored as hell. They weren't getting an instinctual need to migrate/walk fulfilled that was creating even more frustration. By not walking, they were also missing out on critical relationship building time with their human. By not walking, they were missing out on the instinctual need to follow a calm, confident leader, a present parent figure, and basically left to figure out life on their own. Once she began walking the dogs, as well as bike them, their behavior dramatically changed. Of course, we went over Dog Psychology and how she needed to behave, so the dogs had someone to trust, respect, and love to lead them. There'd nothing wrong with playing in the backyard as part of the exercise. Just make sure you make the time to fulfill their instincts in multiple ways by taking them for a structured walk!🙏❤️
