A recent Ontario court case has once again highlighted how some individuals are exploiting 🇨🇦Canada’s generous family reunification rules by entering into fraudulent marriages in exchange for money or other benefits that can lead to immigration status. In a judgment released in November, the Superior Court of Justice detailed how Ontario resident Amratpal Singh Sidhuopenly admitted to participating in multiple “sham” marriages in India. These arrangements were intended to help women attempt to immigrate to Canada, in return for cash payments and caregiving support for his mother. Sidhu was not appearing before a criminal court, but rather in family court, seeking a declaration that he was legally married to Amandeep Kaur, the mother of his three children. Kaur disputed the claim, and the judge ultimately concluded that no valid marriage existed under Ontario law despite a traditional ceremony held in India in 1997 and the couple having lived together for years. The case serves as a reminder that selling or fabricating relationships for immigration purposes is not a new issue in Canada. It also raises an important question: as Authorities strengthen anti-fraud measures, are legitimate couples facing the unintended consequences of increased scrutiny, longer processing times, and more intrusive questioning? * #ImmigrationPolicy * #FraudPrevention * #ImmigrationSystem * #LegalReform * #ImmigrationIntegrity
