I’m not perfect. No parent is. Meltdowns used to trigger me so badly. I’m guilty of yelling at my kids, telling them to “stop crying” in a public place, etc. Then I read this, and it completely changed my perspective. While I would tell my kids to “stop crying” during a meltdown, I’d also tell them to “be careful,” or help them achieve a task they were attempting. I was assuming that, physically, they were incapable of what they were trying to do, but fully capable of understanding emotional regulation. That couldn’t be further from true. Patience is hard, but our kids meltdown because they don’t understand emotional control or critical thinking. They don’t know there are other ways to communicate those big feelings. But they do know how to reach that snack, paint that picture, run through that meadow, or whatever it might be. They’re pretty incredible. #sahm #parenting #parentingtips #toddler #newmom
