D&D is even an example of this. eg Paladins draw power from Oaths, Sorcerers draw power from their bloodline, Wizards gain power from studying and learning spells, Warlocks draw power from making pacts with powerful entities to borrow their power, Bards use art like music or poetry to essentially tug at the invisible fabric of the cosmos, clerics draw power from ideals and beliefs, druids and rangers draw power from nature or primal forces/entities, monks get power from chi/ki.

I hate soft magic systems because the people in the universe never take advantage of the power they really weirdo. like star wars. the force is insanely overpowered if you think like a normal person. and by normal I don't mean neurotypical. I mean someone in our world who would look for advantages to use in the power system.

My favorite magic system stuff is when the hard magic system is actually a restriction on actual magic which is way more soft, and the characters figure out how to get around the system

I’m writing a comic where the same magic system is used differently by different ethnicities they call it magical alphabets :) Also went so much in detail about origins (this universe doesn’t have gods) that accidentally ended up doing calculations and relating magic to real world physics haha

best for me for this is the name of the wind by Patrick rothfuss. Sympathy is a hard set system that really any intelligent person can learn and master with measurable and direct power. mathematically precise and exact. then you have the deeper power of naming that is incredibly hard to learn and is REAL magic that gives you control over objects or forces. then you have even deeper magic like gramary and glamoury that the fae use. such cool stuff.

That's part of what I liked about the Abhorsen series by Garth Nix with its Free Magic and Charter Magic, where one is more naturalistic and the other is more ritualistic.

one of the core parts of my world is that there is this whole academia about magic treating it like a STEM science... and then there are also schools and old mages of the same academia just handwave ir cuz "cmon its magic, calculating all the time means never casting"

It is really fun! But one thing that happens a lot in anime that I don't like is how two magic systems, that were understood as completely different things, are revealed to actually be just two branches of the same system. Idk, sounds clever at first but it also makes that world so smaller than before.

soft magic systems always seem to just be nerfed so the author doesn't have to worry about plot holes. person had god like power? why didn't he fix X? "reasons"

Favorite magic system comes from a series called Lightbringer where light and the color spectrum are the focus. It begins as very hard magic, but as the series goes on it expands. There’s colors that most people cannot see, there’s ways to use certain colors that weren’t taught because “heresy”, colors though to be mythical are being shown, and then you get into these divine/demonic beings that just call this magic system science and have powers non comprehended. It starts interesting but rigid, and then the magic system pulls it’s own walls down.

my favorite systems comes from a fanfiction every species seems to have a different form of magic and the ones that seem to have the most bendable magic or fay. but a common saying within this fanfiction was to break the rules you must learn them because magic was about breaking the rules and there was no rule that truly was unbreakable or at least most of the time sometimes they were hard limits but not a lot and those hard limits were extreme

I love when the world is like yours expresses itself this way because of your culture and the way it was taught to you. “If I never told you, your power is contained in a box you might find another structure” type thing

My world has like three, two are just drawing from opposing essence sources but are similar in a way, the third is called Blood Casting and involves glyphs and distilling blood to get the essence within it to use

I've been reading a lot of Xianxia fantasy books lately and I've really enjoyed that part of it. That the ways that each character interacts with the magic of the world can be so different.

I really love the way Steven Brust uses his systems. the main two, sorcery and witchcraft are so creative and distinct while feeling like they make total sense coexisting in the same world, among a few other systems that happen to exist.
