Background on Aadhaar and digital healthcare India's Aadhaar is a biometric-based, 12-digit unique identity number for residents, linked to fingerprints, iris scans, and demographic data. In the healthcare sector, this digital identity is used under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission to create a Unique Health ID (now called the Ayushman Bharat Health Account, or ABHA ID) that links a person's health records across providers. It has also been used to streamline services, including hospital registration and direct cash transfers for health programs. the Challenges and negative consequences Exclusion from critical service Technical and administrative failures have excluded vulnerable populations from receiving healthcare and welfare benefits. Authentication failures: Elderly people and manual laborers with worn fingerprints often experience biometric authentication failures, preventing them from accessing services. Technical glitches: Rural residents with limited internet access and digital literacy face significant barriers. Some patients have missed appointments due to text message-based appointment systems that they did not understand. Data errors: A 2018 study found an 8.8% error rate in basic Aadhaar demographic data, which can block access to benefits.
