What’s messed up, and you will know this, is the umpire’s alignment is off. He is positioned inside of the plate so his view is if it’s directly below him, strike. Except for the fact he is aligned too far inside

I’m glad they showed the overhead view of both pitches. For those who think this stuff is easy… I screen recorded both pitches and slowed them down and paused when the ball came into the frame. Both pitches, when they’re roughly 6 feet from the plate, are still in the strike zone. By the time they get to the front edge, they’re 2-3 inches off the plate, then about 4-5 inches when the catcher catches them. So, imagine you have a 3” sphere traveling 97mph directly at you from roughly 60 feet away, which means it takes it about 0.4 seconds to get there. Now, imagine that 3” sphere that’s traveling 142 ft every second isn’t coming straight at you… it’s moving horizontally and/or vertically. Now, you have to determine the horizontal and vertical positioning of that 3” sphere during the one 100th of a second when it’s over a 17” space that is roughly 3 feet in front of you. Sounds easy, right? Wait… there’s more. You have about half a second to make that decision; and; if that 3” sphere was where it was supposed to be two 100ths of a second before it got to its destination, but it’s horizontal movement moved it out of that source by the time it was one 100th of a second away, then people who have never done what you have worked your entire life at will yell and scream and tell you that you suck and you should be replaced by robots.
