Today we commemorate the day of the martyrdom of the guardian of the miraculous, myrrh-streaming icon of the Mother of God of Iveron. He was born on May 13, 1948, in Valparaíso, into a devout Catholic family of Spanish aristocratic origin. As a child, he showed a talent for painting, and both he and his family hoped he would become an artist. In 1962, at the age of twelve, José was on his way to a Catholic church when he happened to hear the beautiful singing coming from the open doors of the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Santiago. The beauty of the church’s interior, its icons, and the service made a deep impression on the boy, and from that time on he began attending the Orthodox church. Two years later, Archbishop Leonty (Filippovich) of Chile received him into Orthodoxy, with the consent of José’s mother. In 1982, he visited Mount Athos, particularly one skete of iconographers, where he was deeply moved by an icon of the Iveron Mother of God painted by the monks there. José asked the monks to sell him the icon, but they refused. However, on the last day of his stay on Athos, he received as a gift from Schema-Abbot Clement (†1997) of the Spaso-Rozhdestvensky Skete a copy of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God. The gifted icon began to stream fragrant myrrh abundantly on November 24, 1982, after his return to Canada. He later recalled: “On November 24, at three o’clock in the morning, I woke up to a strong fragrance. At first, I thought it came from relics or a spilled bottle of perfume, but when I approached the icon, I was astonished - the entire icon was covered with fragrant myrrh! I froze in place at such a miracle! Soon the myrrh-streaming icon was taken to the church. From that time on, the icon of the Mother of God constantly exuded myrrh, except during Holy Week. Remarkably, the myrrh flowed mainly from the hands of the Mother of God and Christ, as well as from the star on the right shoulder of the Most Pure One. At the same time, the back of the icon always remained dry.” News of this miraculous event spread quickly, and the icon was placed in an Orthodox cathedral in Montreal, where countless people came to venerate it. According to witnesses, the myrrh had a strong aroma of roses and was collected in vessels. For fifteen years, José was the guardian of this holy icon, traveling with it to Orthodox parishes in many countries. José Muñoz, who always accompanied the miraculous icon, conducted himself with great humility. He never sought attention, and during church services he stood quietly at the back, unnoticed, like a monk. He often returned to Mount Athos, sometimes even with the wonderworking icon. There, he was tonsured a monk by Schema-Abbot Clement with the name Ambrose, in honor of St. Ambrose of Optina. On the night of October 31, 1997, he was murdered in his room at the “Grand Hotel” in Athens, and the myrrh-streaming icon disappeared without a trace. On that day, Orthodox Christians commemorate the Apostle Luke, who according to tradition was the first iconographer - while many others, in contrast, celebrate Halloween. On November 12, 1997, thirteen days after his murder, he was buried according to his will in the Russian cemetery at the Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, New York (USA). According to witnesses, during the funeral, despite the long time that had passed, his body bore only traces of torture, but showed no signs of decay or odor. On December 9, 1997, the fortieth day after his death, candles at his grave miraculously lit by themselves and continued to burn for an unusually long time. #IveronIcon #OrthodoxMiracle #Find2God #orthodox
