Hey I am an Elon fanboy, but I like charts #CapCut #greenscreen #Science #math #sciencetok #EduTok #themoreyouknow #twitter This tweet by Elon Musk is ridiculous, let me show you why. Now I look at charts and data every day, I’m obsessed with this kind of stuff. I saw this chart and whenever I see a y axis not starting from 0, I’ll be honest I I get suspicious. It’s one of my pet-peeves, in some context it is ok to do it, but let’s take a closer look at this one. First thing I did, is that I had to convert this chart to actual data instead of an image, so I put gridlines over the chart like this. I’m not going for 100% accuracy; this works for what I’m trying to show and I was able to get this table and recreate this chart. As you can see the y-axis is starting from 242M DAU like the tweet, but what if it started from 0? Hold on for now though. First of all you might be asking what is DAU right now, and I went to Twitter’s company filings, or 10Ks as they call them and found you this definition: We define mDAU as people, organizations, or other accounts who logged in or were otherwise authenticated and accessed Twitter on any given day through twitter.com, bla bla bla you can pause and read it if you want. Now one thing; all over Twitter’s filings they mentioned mDAU and not DAU the difference is between Monetizable Usage and total Usage right. So I was able to find this chart from their filing that showed the average mDAU up to the 3 months ending in June 2022, now I know this is a quarterly average but it’s at 237.8M, and the chart that Elon shared for just June seems to be higher, so obviously the Monetizable users would be a smaller group than the total users. Why didn’t he share the mDAU instead of DAU, I’m not really sure, it can just be nothing right. But what matters to me mostly here is, look at the growth rates, the difference between the bars going back are 9 million usage, 14 million usage, 5 million usage and so on. The chart that was shared in the tweet, the difference between the minimum and maximum is roughly around just 3.5 million usage, so nothing crazy especially with everything that is going on including the elections.
