It’s called independent learning. That’s what universities should be doing.

That’s the same in every college. You’re expected to teach yourself.

I didn't attend Cambridge but I found university of lectures very useless. they give you maybe 50 slides and 1000 pages to read and learn on your own. I could literally miss 80% of my classes and could still take exams. I'm basically spending money for a piece of paper and to read at home. 🙄

he is absolutely right tho, they charge thousands in fees and you get 0 lecture time. Whats the point in paying that much then? University degrees are slowly becoming useless and a meme of what they used to mean.

that's how it should be , they expect you to have had a start up in high school or something like that , so in university you do everything yourself

I hate this type of learning. I think it defies the idea of higher education as you expect someone more knowledgeable to give you the skills and facts you need to develop in your profession. Otherwise, all of us can be self-taught in this day and age.

I understand that in the workplace no one will be holding your hand, but you also won't be paying £9k plus for that privilege! Institutions framing "independent study" as a necessary skill that excuses lack of teaching is disgusting and shows that a degree is now a completely different beast to what it once was.

Yeah, that's literally just uni. That's not unique, although depends on the subject, as I'm sure it does at Cambridge.

In the UK we teach children to work independently. Certainly, by university you will not have any direct support. The lectures serve to provide a framework. You must study independently and guide your own study. Welcome to the UK. The same pretty much applies from primary school all the way through. It’s a system designed to enable the child to produce THEIR OWN WORK 😂 of course in primary and secondary school there is some input which becomes increasingly more minimal with age and ability. There is also some minor input in uni. But it’s dependant on the level of study you’re in…

This is how every university should be. If you need hand holding, go into the trades where you can learn a procedure and do it over and over. Still highly needed, but a different kind of labor then we need for high tech jobs.
