??? he quite literally never says that. He tried to save his friends. The whole point was saving his friends. How he could keep everyone safe including paradis and this was the only way. Not falling in love with Mikasa. He literally chose their safety over his love for her. If he wanting to there was an option for him to live one path lifetime for 4 years happy with Mikasa. But he chose the rumbling instead
