This is the 168th Street Subway Station. Back in 1906, this station opened as part of the IRT—New York’s very first subway line. Engineers blasted through solid rock to carve a tunnel nearly 100 feet below street level, making it one of the deepest stops in the city. Because of that depth, the only way to reach the 1-train is by elevator—a feature that was installed from the start and was an uncommon convenience in the early 20th century. The station is a blend of Beaux-Arts elegance and utilitarian design, proving that public infrastructure can be both functional and artful.
