@norbertobriceno: Kinda Interesting Things #204: The 168th Street Subway Station If you take the 1 train to Washington Heights, beneath the intersection of Broadway and St. Nicholas Avenue, you’ll step out into one of New York City’s most dramatic transit hubs. This is the 168th Street Subway Station. Back in 1906, this station opened as part of the IRT—New York’s very first subway line. Engineers blasted through solid rock to carve a tunnel nearly 100 feet below street level, making it one of the deepest stops in the city. Because of that depth, the only way to reach the 1-train is by elevator—a feature that was installed from the start and was an uncommon convenience in the early 20th century. The station is a blend of Beaux-Arts elegance and utilitarian design, proving that public infrastructure can be both functional and artful. The Oldest operating subway line is the BMT Canarsie Line, followed by the BMT Jamaica Line. The BMT Canarsie Line found it's beginnings in 1865 under the BRT Eastern Division.

Curious why the original elevators were put out of service. I assume they’re too small for modern volume and couldn’t be retrofitted?
