The female casualties of the last earthquake in Afghanistan reminds me of this. Women were left under rubble, or medically untreated due to "modesty" norms

It's a choice between CPR and death. If you're performing it, don't worry about injuries etc to their body because the alternative is you're too gentle and they die. You're just keeping their brain alive till the medics get there

And this is exactly why when I see something I stop! I am no doctor or nurse but I did work as a cna for a long time. My hope is always that even if it’s outdated info I can help in some way! And I would not be shy with a woman. 💯

This is similar to the Muslims in some countries who are afraid to touch the women so they die

I'm ultra busty and I just know people would let me die to protect my modesty. Would they expose my chest for a defib? Would they feel comfortable performing CPR through my big chest? I mean, one time a woman was having seizures on the street, and as I was trying to drag her body off the road, people were literally stepping over her and pretending they couldn't see us

I believe so strongly that, in First Aid classes we should be practising removing bras and cutting them off dummies (whenever possible--like, mine couldn't be cut off cos it's a big cup bra). I think we need the muscle memory of cutting off a shirt, shaving a man's hairy chest for defib, touching breasts on the dummy, etc. If it's not muscle memory, taboos and shame will get in the way in a real-life event. Yes, let people giggle inappropriately and awkwardly in the first aid class. Get all of that discomfort OUT

I agree. As an EMT I could see where lay people were more gentle and didn’t want to expose women’s chests. But, at that point a person is dead, so the violence of chest compressions is irrelevant. The deeper, the better, regardless of male or female if we want people to live.

When I was in my EMT class and we were being CPR certified, we were told if we were breaking ribs, we were doing it right. You have to push the chest down 2 inches to be effective, doesn’t matter the gender. 2 inches for adults AND children.

We teach this to our students. We don’t have female dummies (working on getting some); but we teach our students this statistic. And tell them if we had a heart attack and they didn’t perform correctly on us (women) then we would haunt them when we’re 🪦😅
