I made a character with my DM that was a changeling and while they were in the party they appeared human and were low level like the party. But on occasion I would do a higher lvl spell or do something not quite right to arouse suspicions. Only two of the other players kinda caught on but unfortunately the campaign stopped being played and then I moved away. Was really fun though.

Nah my DM made me work for that 😂 took me years to start dating a BBEG. Definitely worth it though. Every now and then when the party is almost down I get to roll to see if she shows up to check on her baby boy 🥰

My buddy is making his own game, we got to test run a DND style and i was the BBEG that had to summon and tame overpowered monsters in the world…lets just say only the Goddess of Death couldve killed me and damn right she did!

similar vibes. but my dm made my character a servant of an evil death god in exchange for bringing back her boyfriend that just died :) with my permission ofc (i gave him full reign to do whatever he likes to her) (it makes the plot spicy)

under one condition, that you have come to the realization how evil the bad guy is and you have sworn to not harm the heroes and to destroy the evil bad guy. because if you allow it it sets the seed of party conflict that could quite quickly and easily not only ruin the game but destroy the player group. it is an Unwritten rule that the player characters get together to work together for a common goal. they don't look into people's histories and Back stories and all of that to find out if they can be trusted. so since it's assumed that the player characters are meant to work together characters that might not trust said random person they met at a bar with their very life it would be a party killer or a game killer move. so no you cannot secretly work for the bad guy

I had a player die relatively early on... a 20 on my part followed by 3 nat 1s from him and a nat 1 from a different party member... rip, anyrate he came back with a leshy plant kineticist with no memory of their past (pf2e plant person who is like an Airbender but for plants specifically) who didnt know that the bbeg was also a Leshy plant Kineticist mixed with wizard.... oh my god the joy this gave me and the trauma he has since learned

my uncle[dm] had a goblin npc named Colby Jack who's only spell was Turing things into cheese. the party 'saved' him and and put him in charge of a large army they had in resistance of the bbeg. little did the party know, the reason he could only turn things into cheese was bc he WAS the bbeg, and had split his mind/power between his original goblin form and his lich persona

My current paladin is basically a window for the b BE g to look through and when he dies I become the b BE g and my party doesn't know of course I plan this out almost a year in advance with my dm It's funny waiting for the last portions of the campaign only for me to turn I've been playing my part Of course the faithful paladin companion helping his friends doing all sorts of things with them having fun but when I die it's hell on earth

i do this to my players, i tell them all the time how i convince someone to betray the party, and have someone set up before hand... that or the BBEG travels with them to keep an eye on things

I have also had the players unknowingly work for, befriend, and do takes for a dif bbeg. the tasks were completely lawful, however they drew resources in different directions making her underhanded enterprise complete jobs that they wouldn't have been able to. "why yes you should draw a large section of the local guards with you to defeat the dragon. it is a threat to the city after all. the local lord should jump at this opportunity and you all might be able to gain faim, reputation, and if you pull it off right, favor with the lord if you let them take credit for forming this expedition.
