Blackbeard’s goal of destruction directly aligns with the will of the fruit, so it makes sense he would achieve mastery of it. In the opposite way, that’s why Kaido could never awaken his Fish Fish fruit since the spirit of the dragon was that of a PROTECTOR not an oppressor like Kaido was. Kaido’s goals were not aligned with the fruit, so his use of it’s power could only be tertiary

Blackbeard probably spent thousands of hours researching all devil fruits, from potential something rocks left for him. That’s why he knew to go for the dark-dark fruit.

To awaken a fruit you have to live with what the fruit believe. Whitebeard wasn’t a destructive person and couldn’t use the quake fruit to its fullest potential unlike Blackbeard.
