The word “short” actually has more letters than “long,” which feels ironic because their meanings are opposite. But that happens because: • Word length doesn’t always match meaning. English words come from different roots (Old English, Latin, Germanic, etc.), so their spelling evolved separately from their meanings. • “Long” comes from the Old English lang, while “short” comes from sceort.
