@wrlwithpatrice: I promise I’m almost done talking about this book. All I have is my video review (my full written review is already up on my Substack) but I think this needs to be said. Some of you are turning into what you hate. #alchemised #alchemisedbysenlinyu #kaineferron #BookTok
The least interesting thing about alchemised is that its original idea was based on hp and handmaids tale.

Heavy on healthcare!! Certain people in the story get multiple surgeons frantically working on them (Soren, Holdfasts, etc) while others who are on the same side die bc there isn’t enough help. Def an interesting conversation. If you’re “important” you get more healthcare, if you’re not…

The irony is that the haters are literally providing and example of one of the major themes of how absolute righteousness is fallible

If only we could like also use this story as a vehicle to discuss how propaganda is used to manipulate people… and how extremism (both sides) negatively impact us.

It’s so ironic too. Like all of Helena’s hard work and sacrifice in the book is ignored and she’s reduced to one thing by “the people”. And the very same thing is happening to the book…. Like there are so many important topics it covers. And yet… ppl up in arms bc there’s HP inspiration.

It's speculative fiction exploring the socio- political ramifications of extremism.

It’s crazy because so many of the people who are linking it to HP are the haters. Like I’ve seen so many more videos from antis talking about Harry Potter and the source material than people who read it and liked it. Do they not see they are doing the exact same thing they are preaching against?

You said everything I’ve been feeling about the topic. Trying to convince people it’s worth the read is like pulling teeth. It’s such a deep and thought provoking book. 😫

The erasure of female coded labor in history. That war isn’t black and white, both sides did horrible things. Use of religon to keep people scared and compliant. It’s an amazing book. And so important in this climate

I keep seeing the argument over if it's Romantasy or not - that's not the freaking point of the book🤨

yes as a nurse I resonated so much with Helena and all her healer stuff. the guilt, exhaustion, pride in what she was able to do

I just read the part where murrough made the prisoners think the other prisoners were the problem to cause in fighting and I was like oh girl watches the news 👀

The book gave a lot of glimpses of current political scenario to me. The horror of war, religion, ethics, women’s autonomy, Helena trying her best as an immigrant to prove herself to others. It’s all painfully true to this world. I never ever thought about the fanfic or the place it originated from. Diminishing this book to just that is bad. The topics discussed in the book should be talked more than giving space to the other author and their books. I loved Alchemised. It was bittersweet. Made me think a lot too.

My biggest issue with people who are telling everyone not to read the book for whatever reason they have are still talking about the book instead of just moving on like I’m sorry but nobody is holding a pew pew to your head telling you to read it and let the rest of us who have read it have productive conversations about the book ❤

THANK YOU FOR SAYING THIS! There’s so much nuance to engaging with this book— the fact that the evil author hates fanfic because she can’t make money off it, the author being nonbinary themselves, writing this fanfic being a part of the author’s development, personal growth, and journey, in addition to all of your salient points regarding the book’s heavy and worthy themes.

The discourse around this book is weird because to me it seems like the only people who are platforming she who shall not be named are the ones yelling that this book shouldn’t be read. I haven’t bought the book yet. I stopped giving Rowling money ages ago. But this book has nothing to do with her. She’s not getting any monetary gain from it.

I agree we could be having such interesting and deep conversations about this book. Personally I do think there are some issues with the birth of it and I think there is a space for that conversation to be had but it’s been had a lot! We could even be having really intriguing conversations about the future of publishing and storytelling and perhaps where they are looking for stories, cash grabbing as an industry and poor editing in a rush to get a bestseller and big buck ( I think there are some massive editing mistakes in the book that make it suffer a bit). But no all we are talking about is the romance and whether or not you need to read the original fanfic in order to read it. I missed nuanced and layered conversations

This is such a great video. We should be facing these conversations! We should be hoping that unsuspecting people pick up this book and it causes them to rethink things. We need to be talking about the analysis and I’m so happy to see people speaking on it.

“Two sides of the same coin” is also a very interesting theme. Where to win in the Alchemised world, you have to actually become like your enemy. And then you realize the “bad guys” are victims too. Moral superiority does not save you.
