@allie_voss: A lot of people are walking around - both progressives and conservatives - with extremely simplistic views and theories of mind for people across the aisle. If you think everyone who disagrees with you politically is either stupid or evil, you aren’t leaving any room for respectful political debate. Because you either don’t respect their morals or their intelligence. Politics shouldn’t get in the way of your social life, but it doesn’t have to if you can have the humility to recognize that you don’t personally hold every key to being a good, intelligent person.

Politics yes. Not human rights. And unfortunately those get intertwined.

I don’t think republicans are evik I think they are either rich and selfish or poor and mislead into voting against their own interests by playing on thier good intentions

If you think the military should be used for political purposes against American citizens, then we don’t have much to talk about. There is a line where politics is not theoretical.

I disagree. sharing values and solutions are both important. two people can want to get rid of homelessness but one person takes a cruel approach of harassing the homelessness and making where they sleep even less accommodating where the other person would advocate for funding homeless shelters, changing zoning laws to make it easier to build more housing and maybe start a soup kitchen. the former person is an evil sack of shit and the latter is actively working on making less homeless people.

I hear what you’re saying, but help me understand something. For example, why would a farmer support Trump’s economic policies when those same policies, like the trade war with China, previously bankrupted many farmers—only for them to be bailed out by tariff revenue, which was itself a consequence of the same policy? Why choose to go through that cycle again? Especially after nobel prize winning economists told you that it would happen? There are nuances for political opinions but when people align themselves to a cause when it’s detrimental to their livelihood and wellbeing and their justification isn’t logically sound, what are we to conclude? Especially when people are trying to help them correct their misguidance.

I beleive most disagreements fall into facts, feelings and philosophy. Most liberals fall into feeling based opinions, I don’t say that to discredit at all, they are more sympathetic people and want to make the world a better place, but the conservative philosophy is that less government is always better and more government even with the intention to do good things will have more harmful effects.

It’s just so egotistical for anyone to think that they are 100 percent correct, 100 percent of the time.

Can someone disagree with me an have good points? Yes. Is that what I’m ever really encountering from the right? The issue comes down to disagreements over provable facts, which are always met with denial. As a progressive, there are party line liberals who I think raise really good points I have to contend with. In a post Trump world, I have not seen a Republican voter make a solid defense of any mainline topic.

I think tribalism is the biggest issue when it comes to politics right now. Too many people are blindly loyal to one side or the other regardless of the issue.

Serious question, do you think it’s a persons social responsibility to tolerate someone else’s support of authoritarianism and racism or is it a given person’s social responsibility to not support authoritarianism and racism?

I’ve said this for a long time and I truly believe it. Most people, no matter where they fall politically, believe what they believe because they think it will be best for society.

I think that well intentions pave the pathway to hell. If you are a logical thinker or emotionally driven seeing eye to eye isn't practical. Logical thinkers see emotionally driven completely out of control and emotionally driven see logical thinkers as cold and mean.

at the end of the day, my friends are doing what they believe is right, and thats really all we can ask of anyone else. as long as they're not actively supporting the violence or hate of innocent people they can be my friend.
