@maryhomiczgier: My possible cancer diagnosis aside, this is why Chief allowing me to lay next to him makes me particularly emotional. I kinda debated on posting this part, but it’s an important milestone for me to be able to fully reflect on. It took years just for trust to be earned. For pure enjoyment and partnership together. It took many more years for him to become affectionate and oh so snuggly. This is only the third time I’ve ever been able to be near him laying down, and the first time he’s fully slept with me against him, and even with his head in my lap. The two prior times were only within this previous year, making it over two decades to earn this level of trust. And it couldn’t have come at a more needed time in my life. My health is declining, rapidly, and I think a certain horse noticed this during his morning nap. Sprawled about the redwood needles of fall he invited me into his velvety soft embrace. I can’t breathe. But as the storm brewing wind flowed in, whilst he gently breathed, all of the stolen breath returned to me. The crisp rain scented air cradled me just as much as him.
