Replying to @RamblingButternutSquash Children take things literally. Their brains are still wiring up meaning, safety, and truth. When we say one thing but mean another — or use sarcasm, vague phrases, or contradictions — it can create cognitive dissonance. That’s when a child’s inner world doesn’t match the message they’re receiving. For example: Saying “I’m fine” when you’re visibly upset. Saying “nothing’s wrong” when a child senses tension. Joking or teasing about something a child takes seriously. In the moment, it might not seem like a big deal. But down the road, this can teach children to doubt their instincts, second-guess their reality, or disconnect from their inner truth.
