Here's a traditional perspective that you may find beneficial. Humans are meant to be a passage through which a river flows from heaven to earth, and we get suffocated if this river is still or blocked. One of the mistakes Muslims make in their rituals and ethics is looking at them as closed acts. In reality, we are meant to adopt religious forms to open a connection to heaven that will develop our taste for the meaning of each act. So, for instance, the hijab is an opening towards heaven that connects us to the spirit of dignity and beauty that hijab represents. It cultivates the wisdom of deep beauty. But this spiritual influence is blocked if we simply see the hijab in a closed manner as an outward act, or we don't include the attitude of spiritual invitation that is prayer. Religious rituals are like cups that are open at the top to receive the spiritual drink or light and blessing that is suited for them, and which transforms our soul.
