As the cervix gradually opens to allow your baby to be born, the experience can vary widely. For some women, this stage may last just 1–2 hours, while for others it may take 12–14 hours or longer. Every woman’s body responds differently, and that’s completely normal. Reaching 10 centimetres means the cervix is fully dilated, and this is when the pushing stage begins. Preparing beforehand can make a big difference: having a birth plan ready ensures that your midwife understands your wishes and can guide and support you in the way that’s best for you as an individual.
