This tale begins in a cozy midlands farmhouse where a grandfather began a journey that now three generations later has perfected the art of kneading artisanal baked goods that the surrounding community attest are in addition to an offering of frozen meats, pickles, chillis and snacks this halal establishment offers serves chocolate chips biscuit bliss and Ruwaida’s Rusks. The family run nature of this spot is unmistakable, inviting me in to see how they get things done I got to meet a husband, wife and daughter, deeply passionate about their business, together with a highly skilled team of staff, eager to get me fed. Sitting down to sample the spread I indulged in everything from tarts, brownies, koesisters, this rainbow cake and the famous salted caramel loaf, which the father invented himself. This delicacy deserves its place in south African food history as anyone who has tried it knows and if you haven’t Hammy says its about time you do.
