It’s actually the chain that stops the ship, not the flukes. The anchor’s flukes just dig into the seabed to hold the chain in place, but the real holding power comes from the weight and length of the chain lying on the bottom. The more chain there is, the more friction and resistance it creates, which is why ships drop way more chain than the water’s depth. Without the chain, even a big anchor can drag along the seabed.
