@missclairebenjamin: How to handle your direct report accusing you of bullying👇 First and foremost it’s important to acknowledge that the way we intend to communicate something isn’t always the way the other person receives it or hears it. Even if we didn’t mean for something to come across as harsh, it doesn’t mean the other person didn’t receive it that way. People will interpret things based on their own experiences and beliefs. This is why if someone accuses you of bullying, it’s important to explore this with curiosity so you can understand more about their experience and discuss what changes need to be made to improve the relationship and also ensure the work gets done. It can be upsetting to be accused of bullying and you might be tempted to apologise and back down like I show in this video. Or become defensive and argue with this accusation. Neither of these scenarios will resolve the situation though which is why it’s important to lean in and seek to understand. This is a good phrase that can be useful in many tense situations: “Can you tell me more about that as I’m curious where that’s coming from.” This helps to: ✅ De-escalate the tension ✅ Explore the real issue ✅ Keep the relationship intact If you think someone is accusing you of bullying as a tactic to dodge responsibility, then I would still recommend responding with curiosity and having real open transparent conversations. I’d also recommend documenting conversations and making your own manager aware of what is going on. 💬 What advice would you offer manager in this situation? 📌 Please remember the advice offered in this video is generalised and will not fit every situation. Therefore, please use your own judgement when using this advice and adapt it to suit your situation. ➕ Follow Claire Benjamin for more strategies on navigating tricky work dynamics #worktips #leadershipdevelopment #emotionalintelligence #corporatelife #managertips #difficultconversations #managingpeople #communicationskills

Straight to HR - do not pass go, do not collect £250. This manager needs to report an accusation of bullying and comply with the company’s bullying policy.

My line manager is notoriously unpredictable and everyone who works with her is terrified of her reactions to things. She’s made me cry at work almost every week for three years. But I know I could never say anything to HR because I know things would only get worse.

as someone who works in HR…. go to HR! don’t handle things yourself. always good to have a mediator or someone to make documentation of what actually is being said. otherwise = he said she said

I’m a bit shocked at the accusation. Clearly there is something wrong with this person. And I guess it is a good thing the manager deals with this very kindly and tries to find out what is wrong. But yikes.

But most people doing this will say what lessens the impact is the manager backing off and reducing workload when that’s not feasible, yet if we explore it the expectation is that’s what happens

I notice that the boss's calm speaking style appeals to me and highlights the importance of a calm and clear approach. It is easier to present even the most difficult issue.

Chances are they have already told their manager four times that they are overwhelmed with work and they haven’t been listening lol

This isn’t the way to develop a resilient, problem-solving and accountable workforce. What happened to managing through ownership and accountability? No wonder managers are stressed if this the example being set
