The first trainer with the training/management plan also offered to board and train Beans for free. Only condition was not posting the progress in real time on social media. Owner declined 💔

I’m curious, what are some examples of Medical issues that would result in this resource guarding or his level of aggression?

I think we also have to remember we only see part of Beans’ whole picture, which is what O shares from her perspective, & snapshots in time via tt videos. We don’t know first hand the entire conversations w/ other professionals, or what they are seeing & thinking of Beans in person, or ALL of Beans’ behavior & the behavior of those around him. We just don’t have the full story, which makes the scary snapshots all the more sad. My heart goes out to them both

I think she made a choice that she wasn’t ready for. I’m sure she thought this was gonna be like her childhood dog that she had because they’re the same breed, and he had resource guard issues that they didn’t correct properly either but were manageable. The second she said that holding the leash while being in the house was too much for her to do and that she would just tie him up, I knew that she was not willing to do what she needed to do to actually get this dog care. I think most people who work with animals can tell that this is definitely more than just guarding aggression. This is bad temperament breeding. And it really sucks because if this dog was any larger breed, it would’ve been euthanized by now.

Hearing about a vet that Denies BE makes me insane.

YES!!! This dog needs to be heavily assessed by a vet, diet change, probiotics, fecal, bloodwork, Meds, and gait Analysis (even X-rays just because) The likelihood that this is being fueled by either a physical or neurological condition is so high. I’ve sent 6 clients back to their vets who were referred to me for behavioral issues in the past few months that actually had considerable orthopedic issues that had been missed in initial examinations.

YES. And to those who are saying “well it’s working,” let’s remember that short term results do not equal long term success.

I agree with 99.999% of what you’re saying, and I appreciate the way you said it. That last 0.001% though has to be that the owner, despite her good intentions, does bear some responsibility here. When she didn’t follow through with the previous good trainer’s instructions, and then that same trainer offered to B&T him for free with the only condition being to keep it off social media…and she declined. I understand she’s in an impossible situation (and I’ve been there myself), but just like me, she does have to take some accountability for mistakes made along her learning journey.

💯 Could not agree more. GI parasites, inappropriate diet for a pup or inadequate amount/frequency of food given (not always straightforward), diseases of malabsorption and maldigestion, chronic nausea, chronic pain are all common in puppies I’ve seen like Beans as a behavior resident. 😢 It is not normal. I agree too it feels like so many people failed them. 💔

Ragnar The Red :
The MAIN symptom that prompted me to get Ragnar’s joints investigated further (after we’d already done a failed pain trial and physio assessment) was that his resource guarding got so severe, he started going for my ex and couldn’t have a dog even in the same *house* without guarding. Ragnar was just over 12 months old at the time and was then diagnosed with bilateral hip dysplasia. Resource guarding is often so much more than just a behavioural problem.

I've met 14 week old Shibas with severe aggression issues. Another layer here is It's not a breed for somone who is a first time pet parent imo.

Something not to gloss over if she has a brain tumor that will effect things. My mother in law had 40 years worth of dog training under her belt and had no capacity to do the training and she unfortunately passed from brain cancer. I was living long distance. I came back and her pack was a mess and some still are. The brain tumor can make some crazy things happen for them and their reaction and thoughts of others. So looking at it as face value they both need support. You can make 1000 of videos about what you think and what needs to be done. Her reality will be different because of the tumor. Trust me I am frustrated as someone owning 2 primitive breeds but know the struggle also trying to reason with a brain tumor.

i think the behavioralist failed too. 6m old puppies shouldn’t be chasing down their owner leaving significant bruises/wounds on her. Or attacking someone without giving a warning.

so well said ash! I seriously see myself in her. I've literally been in her shoes- however I had access to amazing resources to ultimately make the decision of BE. I am still so angry that the vet behaviorist denied her. if that happened to me with Nobu, I might have even resorted to similar methods. I can't say for sure, but I would be at a complete loss if I was denied and then not given resources.

Dogs have come out of board and trains with issues they didn’t go in with. Thank you for advocating for Beans… there are a lot of “dog trainers” on this app that the average person thinks is adequate creating all the backlash as seen in these comments.

Thank you for speaking on this. I so appreciate your perspective, and genuinely the first truly balanced and understanding opinion I’ve seen on this topic. I too have so much empathy for his mom. As a veterinary professional who also works in training, I agree wholeheartedly that she has been failed on many fronts. As someone who knows how much care and heart goes into these fields that have failed her, it is so sad to see because most people truly are doing things well intentioned, though misguided. Hopefully this case can serve as a reminder to all of us as animal care providers in any form, that there are pet owners out there that truly have their pets best interests at heart and just don’t have or know how to find, the resources to help them.
