The breathing effects are just a visual aid so that readers and watchers can visualize the actual stroke of a blade technique. that's what I've always read them as anyway.

The joke is “I understand that the water and fire are drawn in for the audience to see the movement of the swords/characters/readability, but it looks so cool, so I’m ignoring it” people know they aren’t there, but acting like they are is fun. It’s essentially the rule of cool overriding real world logic

i interpreted it more as like… they’re so skilled at their respective breathing styles that it looks like said effect. like being slashed by water breathing just FEELS like being slashed by water so the fluid motions cause it to look like water too… if that makes sense. muichiro probably gets a mist effect by moving his clothes, immense speed, and throwing up the dust on the ground when he moves. which causes the mist effect people talk about. sanemi probably moves his sword so fast that it causes an immense amount of wind to surround him which creates the vortex effect. although demon slayer is very inconsistent when it comes to this because Zenitsu burns his clothes after using thunder breathing in the movie so… and how would people even see love and sound breathing… 😭
