Here’s how it went: Went to my first dirt bike race this weekend. Pretty early on I went down in a corner between a tree and some logs, it was either go down or become part of the tree and was pinned under my bike, I broke my boot pulling my leg out from under my bike and then promptly after I was out of the way someone else ran my bike over. With the help from an awesome sweep I was up and then immediately had to do a nasty hill climb followed by some fun downhill with large loose rocks. Slid across a log and drove my wrist into a stump. Lay my bike down a few more times, then I get my groove and it’s fun for a minute, but I’m realizing that something is wrong with my bike, the right side fork was not compressing, it was locked up, im realizing this when theres still about 12 miles left to go, but there wasn’t anything I could do but ride it out back to camp. Go down a few more times. Then I come into a steep drop off down to the right, (remember my fork on the right is locked up) I tumbled down the hill, flipping my bike over and over I land at the bottom of the hill and my bike is wheels up on the side of the hill, flip my bike and drag it down the hill. Got myself and my bike up and sat there for a solid minute contemplating my decisions. Pulled some branches out of my bike, the handlebars are twisted now. Get on my bike and come to a hill and loop my bike out, first time I’ve ever done that, seeing my bike come up and over me like that was a real treat. Get up and drag my bike down the hill. Now I’m beyond exhausted, scared and disoriented. Try two more times to get up the hill, shaking and I drop my bike twice. I sat there again, questioning what I was doing, and decided to give it one last try before I asked for help. Finally made it up the hill. Almost back to camp, lay my bike down again and I’m a hurt unit and exhausted, a guy passed me and noticed I was not in good shape and stopped, got off of his bike and ran down to make sure I was okay. I was up and getting on my bike when he came running down. Made it back to camp 30mins over the time I wanted to be at, but I made it back by myself and in one piece and I’m so proud of myself for that. I do wonder how I would have done if I didn’t have handling issues with my bike, laid it down or sat and questioned what I was doing, but I learned a lot, and I had fun because I knew I wasn’t out there to win anyway. Almost every single person that passed me or saw me, either asked if I was good or cheered me on. What a cool community. 🤘🏻💕 To add: My bike is a 2022 YZ250F. Weighs about 234lbs. The race was 17mile laps. Most racers did 2 or 3 laps. Mostlty everyone crashed at least once per lap. Even with my multiple crashes in one lap I was still only 30mins behind the average times, and still not the slowest lap. The trail difficulty was not necessarily out of my comfort zone, it was challenging but I’ve done all of that level of stuff before, just not in race and it had some challenges that threw the pros around. I raced through tight single track with a locked up fork but still was in 2nd/3rd gear aside from a couple low gear hill climbs. Was I in over my head? Yeah probably, but this was my first race, I have to start somewhere, and I did it. There was a lot of those that didn’t even finish. I have some bruises but thats it.
