Schooling shows don’t show up on your horses record though, so for anyone who may need to lease or sell their horse later has a harder time getting it done without a usef record. I also don’t need a 5* experience, but I need good footing. I’ve shown in europe at facilities that are nowhere near as nice as americas, but there 1-3 big rings, good footing, and lots of competition. I’d pay around 150 euro including training/trailering. If I want a good sized ring and footing for the 1.10/1.15 I need to spend AT LEAST 1500 (probably closer to 2500 with stall/training/office&nomination fees etc).

we run shows out of barn 4to 5 times a season, year end awards, great ribbons and prizes. 25 a stall, 12$ a class, 20 office fee. Some shows we struggle to break even because we just dont get the numbers.

Very well said! It's important for people to learn about their own horses.

Yes!! And the local, schooling shows! It blows my mind that people don’t WANT to do all those things. I want to be ammy where people go “yea she’s an ammy but she knows so much”. I always want to know more, do more, learn more. It’s crazy

Yes! Not to mention, you can have excellent care, but the facilities don’t look a certain way. You want smaller, local shows but don’t want to support with volunteering while you’re there

I can’t get over how people expect to bond with their horse if they aren’t doing the care. 🤷🏻‍♀️am I wrong?

Very very very well said. Plus, not for nothing, that’s where the whole art of horsemanship thing comes together. Parked out in a field just kinda figuring it out. I took out studs by myself crying last weekend because my trainer had to go ride right after I fell and it was honestly kind of nice. Like a quiet moment with me and my horse. That only happens at small local shows. It’s too chaotic at big ones. Plus local shows can still have great courses.

I also LOVE smaller local shows but sadly so many in my area are disappearing. I will say though that I don’t mind smaller or “backyard” but I refuse to go to shows that are unsafe. If the jump poles are rotting, the ground has holes my horse could trip in, or people are allowed to ride dangerously because no one is enforcing rules, than I’m not likely to come back.

You are similar to my daughter’s trainer. We loved her, she expected the girls to take care of themselves and their horses. We had no grooms (just parents 😉). We kept it affordable. But it was the exception not the rule in our area.

I'm Not with a boushy barn...When WEC first openned under NSBA was Soooo much better...then flipped to USEF...and priced the non boushy barns out...was hoping was a new opportunity but didn't last long. USEF is catering to where the money is and pricing the rest of us out, sadly. It's going to just get worse.

What The Barn Mom Knows :
I ride at a teaching and show barn. We have a regular string of clients that show 6-12 shows a year. We also have riders that only show at local schooling shows. We also have riders that only show at our In-Barn shows. We also have an IEA team and coach two local IHSA teams. So yes, I don’t support the upper eschelon bougie. I still don’t agree with all of the fees, etc and the cost of everything.

That’s why I love going to my local open saddle club show in Cumming (Midway). Work off the trailer and everything is super affordable. A class is a class regardless if it’s at a saddle club or a rated show.

I think a lot of people don't want to ride, they just want to win. The best part of horses I have found is that it isn't easy, and is rarely pretty (1

I'm 51 and my first local show with cross rails. I don't care about being top 5. I just want to jump stuff and get bettter. I'm looking for a community of middle aged women doing the same.I have my own farm and do my own work.

Owned and managed my own facility for 15 yrs. Even after being involved with horses for over 30 yrs of my life, I’m still learning. The people who expect more services and everything to be done for them are also partly why there is such a lack of horsemanship and education surrounding horse ownership happening these days. New people will come into the industry and completely drink whatever koolaid their trainer is serving. These people think they can’t survive in horses without that trainers opinion and don’t bother to educate themselves. This leaves a lot of room for unscrupulous trainers to take advantage of clients financially. But then those trainers need to do whatever it takes to keep those clients happy and keep the cash flowing in. Lather, rinse, repeat. I’d much rather be at a barn like yours where people are being educated and learning to ride their own horse instead of someone always doing it for them. Im also fine with “only” showing locally. I can’t justify spending the thousands and thousands of dollars to keep up with the Joneses. I want my daughter to grow up how I did and learn how to do all the horse care correctly herself, even if that’s not being taught to her friends

I started similar to you. For a variety of reasons I’ve made changes to how we show (stall cleaner required at rated shows for kids under 18) because I had too many going and I couldn’t police the stall cleaning enough (it was subpar and therefore not fair to the horse). However, my program is I would say mid to low priced for my area. My show fees and my board/training. And it is very much focused on my people learning to do their own training. I rarely ride their horses at shows and we do 1 maybe 2 prorides per week at home. The rest my clients do in lessons and hacks. I do my best to impart real horsemanship from the ground up. And I’m full! I even have an overflow barn. We attend rated and outreach shows alike. We have lots of fun. But my clients, most of them, budget strictly when it comes to shows. I’m hoping the rate increases don’t put too many over the edge…

Omg I love this . I’m the cowgirl in Wellington . I do lessons . We work out of trailers . We don’t have grooms . My clients work their tails off and do their homework . Well all my horses were top 6 for the circuit in Wellington last year and close to that the year before . We win 1/4 of their classes . You to to do the work folks if you want the results .

I’m at a small training barn in SW GA. With what I pay I don’t expect 1% but my trainer does his best to offer that. I went for lessons this morning, and ended up helping catch a 30 yr old mare who got loose (she acted 5, and was in heat). Did I care? Nope. Helped catch, then brought my horses in for lessons. I’m an adult Amy just trying to get back into rated shows, and USEF is making it more unaffordable than ever!! I’ll end up sticking to local and schooling shows due to it. Not because I’m not talented enough, or that my horses lack talent and great care(they get the best care!) but because the fee increases are crazy, the show fees are just as crazy and at this point I see zero benefit.

I run a small show series and we’re lucky to get 30 riders and it’s a club to try to keep the ground and you’re right they get hundreds of riders at the places that cost you 500 or 1000 for a weekend but where you can go show for 45 or $50 for the day or 100 at the best they’re not showing up thank God, our judges work with us or we wouldn’t be able to have them
