On January 25th, 1980, Dr. Margaret Kilcoyne, a 50-year-old assistant professor of medicine at the Columbia College vanished from her Nantucket summer home. Kilcoyne had recently claimed a breakthrough in her research, believing it would earn her a Nobel Prize. In the days before her disappearance, she exhibited unusual behaviour, including large purchases- $645 on groceries and $200 on alcohol. Allegedly Margaret planned to host a party to announce her medical discovery. On the evening of January 25th, 1980, Dr. Margaret Kilcoyne dined at her summer home with her brother Leo Kilcoyne and two friends. Her brother Leo, was staying at her Nantucket home for the weekended. Margaret had asked him that night to wake her up at 6am the next morning, as she planned on attending church. Leo heard his sister’s alarm early the next morning, but when he went into her bedroom to make sure she was awake, he could not find her. At 7:15am Leo Kilcoyne called Nantucket police department to report his sister missing. Her winter coat, boots, wristwatch and purse had been left behind in the home- the temperatures were very cold the night she went missing. An extensive search began and Acres of forest that surrounded Kilcoyne’s home, as well as ponds, bogs, moors and the southeastern shoreline of the island were thoroughly searched but nothing turned up. Police officers and firefighters searched the whole east side of the island on foot before the efforts were called off on January 28th. In February 1980, two residents found a passport, savings book, sandals and a wallet belonging to Margaret Kilcoyne, piled neatly at the edge of a clearing by Philips Run swamp area. The items were found in plain sight around a mile from Margaret’s summer home, the area had already been thoroughly searched a week earlier. Police were called and another full scale search began. Around 150 yards away from the pile of belongings, police found a brown long sleeve blouse that was later identified as belonging to Margaret Kilcoyne. The area the blouse was found in was also previously searched one week eariler by police. It was believed that Margaret had suffered a mental breakdown and had taken her own life by walking into the ocean - this theory was put forward by her brother, Leo Kilcoyne. Leo told police that she was in a “very upset and somewhat confused state” and that he had come to island to get her some psychiatric help. Other close friends/family believe that this is not the case and another party may have been involved with Margaret’s strange disappearance. Margaret Kilcoyne’s was never found and she has not been seen for 44 years. Case sent in by- @alexandra🙀‼️ #truecrime #truecrimestory #truecrimeanimated #fyp #viralvideo
