@pbsnews: No single industry in the American economy relies more on immigrant labor than livestock and meat production. The shift began a half-century ago as the influence of labor unions and wages declined. PBS News Hour's Fred de Sam Lazaro looks at how this change played out in Austin, Minnesota after the landmark Hormel strike 40 years ago. #immigration #migration #labor #agriculture #food #news #Trump #politics

THIS!!!!!! It’s the corporations not wanting to pay a living wage as their profits increased. Then they hire those willing to work for that wage. It’s not immigrants taking your jobs, it’s the job openings THE COMPANY created by not paying a living wage.

This is the true immigration story They do not want you to know about. Immigrants and the undocumented are people, too. They're just trying to live a normal life. Instead, you get a narrative that is insanely xenophobic.

PBS is not telling the whole story AGAIN... Hormel engineered the entire destruction of the Union.. lied to everybody.. The workers that went on strike all they wanted was better wages and benefits. Hormel is a bad company! DFL GOVERNOR Rudy Perpich allowed this to happen. What made the Hormel conflict so tragic was that the company’s two-track plan succeeded precisely because it unfolded under a government that still believed modernization was synonymous with progress. The DFL had built programs to keep jobs in Minnesota through industrial development bonds and tax incentives. Hormel used those very tools to modernize a plant that would later become the staging ground for its confrontation with organized labor. When the company finally demanded deep wage cuts, it was not an act of desperation. It was the completion of a long-term plan to reset the balance of power. Hormel had used modernization and the threat of relocation to gain leverage, and by the time the strike erupted, the machinery of control was already in place.

I really appreciate this reporting. Thank you. I’m from the Twin Cities and didn’t know about Austin background. Immigrants are what make this country great and beautiful, we should be so lucky to live in a country that supports welcoming all. And now seeing the threats to our neighbors and coworkers makes me physically ill. Trump is a disgrace.

If they didn’t include facility upgrades in their budget something is not right, never let a company, your boss, or your country tell you there’s not enough money. Look at who has it.
