@ravenhawk22: Remembering Master Sergeant Gary Gordon and Sergeant First Class Randy Shughart - October 3rd, 1993, Mogadishu, Somalia - After Super 6-4 went down, MSG Gary Gordon and SFC Randy Shughart, who were providing sniper support from overhead, requested to be inserted to assist the crew. Being denied twice, they were given permission after the third request. They knew full well what they were asking to do as the mob closed in on the crash site. They went in anyway. - They defended the crew until they were overwhelmed by shear numbers and ultimately killed. For their incredible heroism and sacrifice, both were awarded Medals of Honor. The citations are too long to post on here, but part of MSG Gordon’s reads: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “...After his third request to be inserted, Master Sergeant Gordon received permission to perform his volunteer mission... Equipped with only his sniper rifle and a pistol, Master Sergeant Gordon and his fellow sniper fought their way through a dense maze of shanties and shacks to reach the critically injured crew members. Master Sergeant Gordon immediately pulled the pilot and the other crew members from the aircraft, establishing a perimeter which placed him and his fellow sniper in the most vulnerable position. Master Sergeant Gordon used his rifle and side arm to kill an undetermined number of attackers until he depleted his ammunition. He then went back to the wreckage, recovering some of the crew’s weapons and ammunition. Despite the fact that he was critically low on ammunition, he provided some of it to the dazed pilot and then radioed for help. After his team member was fatally wounded and his own rifle ammunition exhausted, Master Sergeant Gordon returned to the wreckage, recovering a rifle with the last five rounds of ammunition and gave it to the pilot with the words, “good luck.” Then, armed only with his pistol, Master Sergeant Gordon continued to fight until he was fatally wounded. His actions saved the pilot’s life.”

The movie Blackhawk Down doesnt do any justice to their sacrifice but it is the closest representation of what happened. I don't watch it anymore... its too sad.

Many ppl do not know they were a 3 man team the 3 rd man was not allowed to leave the chopper even tho he wanted to someone had to remain to provide cover . I can’t imagine what he goes through knowing death was imminent in this situation and yet he had to watch his brothers get dragged thru the streets ! Also Mike Durant lives every day thanks to these 2 men . Tru hero’s .

The American army is being exploited by the rulers, and their sons are dying for the sake of power, and Paris will not care about them. They will lay flowers and leave, and forget the heroes. These are the governments.

operation Neptune Spear. it leads me to wonder whether the overall cost of the mission to capture Aidids top advisers was ultimately worth the men and hardware lost. in general terms armed forces aren't really equipped for guerilla warfare which Mogadishu effectively was

So was Gordon or Shughart KIA first? The caption says Gordon was the latter but everyone knows “Gordys gone man”. I’m not saying the movies right but would like to know the real account
