What most Japanese people are hoping for from Ms. Takaichi isn’t really about gender equality. The media will probably keep highlighting that she’s the first woman for a while, but what people are genuinely interested in are her policies.

In Mexico, we've had a similar situation. We just elected our first female president, but it's not necessarily a win because she was the governor of a state where police were sent to use force against women who were peacefully marching for the 8M Movement. A woman being a leader doesn't necessarily mean it's a win for feminism.
