@hurricanecolbs: Bullying and lack of support for dispatch trainees is a huge problem that is causing many people to leave prematurely in an industry that already struggles to retain staffing. Yes, this job is hard. A large percentage of people won’t make it through training for that alone. However, more dispatchers are being pushed out the door that we can’t afford to lose because of toxic work environments. If this problem isn’t addressed, staffing levels at dispatch centers nationwide will continue to suffer.@Gaby 🚔 #911 #911dispatcher #dispatch #dispatcher #dispatchersoftiktok
I’m still learning I’m getting to my one year mark and I had a great trainer but I am hard on myself because I’m usually the only one there listening to pd, fire, and ems. For 12 hours straight

trainees are there to learn, the trainer is there to teach, there shouldn't EVER be belittling, yelling or bullying. we do not eat our young, we support, we redirect, we make the training program better by being clear and not being mean just because "that's how I was trained" be better!

I’ve been a dispatch for the same agency for 4 years. I just became the sole trainer for my agency. I love my little ducklings so much. I push them hard because I see their potential. I do make sure to constantly give them words of encouragement! 🖤

Well I guess I’m lucky- I’m in a regional center and they treat us like gold. Had an entire training academy and the support I’ve received on the floor is phenominal. Our agencies treat us like the assets we are. I hope everyone can find a similar place!

i dispatched a little over 2 years. 2 years at one agency and 4 months at another. my trainer at my last agency would constantly belittle me and tell me i’ll eventually mess up so bad that someone will die and then i’ll go to jail. it got so bad i couldn’t even go within the county i worked (even on my off days) without crying. she ruined dispatch for me.

Training was pretty good I was in for about three weeks then cut loose. Like you I'm in a smaller county. Im learning new things everyday but I enjoy being a dispatcher. Ended up taking the shift my trainer was on and she is one of my favorites. Yeah have my rough days but who doesn't. Been here almost a year and don't plan on leaving anytime soon.

I just got through my call taker training and was lucky, but I will say I’m nervous about dispatching because I have heard those trainers and they are very aggressive.

this is a fair assessment I think there is also training fatigue and it's one of the reason why I stepped down from training. I've been at my center for 5 years now. I'm badge 276 and now we are in the high 500's. the last 2 years they have been aggressively hiring with large classes (the largest 16) so on top of the non stop training new call takers we have been cross training into dispatch as well. it's hard to keep the morale up when you're overworked and is why I decided to step down rather than take it out on the new hires.

My trainers were great! They’d always say “we’re going to let you take over and yes we will watch you struggle but know we won’t let anything bad happen to you or the officers. We need to see how you respond with stress.” And any time I said I needed help they’d back me up which was nice.

My training was “here. Do this.” And then didn’t explain. And expected me to do it. And if I messed up. 🙃 Stress. So much stress.

my trainer yelled at me in front of everyone. above everything I was just embarrassed that she had been so loud about it, but it was definitely a sure-fire way to make sure I never made that mistake again.

I quit in training. Lasted 4 months and it was majority bc of my trainers. They were horrible to me. I became friends with someone and she seen me with both trainers and said the same thing that they were horrible My third trainer was good but I was already out of it.

My agency we have calltaker and dispatchers. We have to do calltaking for a minimum of one year before being able to promote to dispatch. Our call taker training was 6 weeks of classroom learning emd/efd/epd and proqa. Then we did 12 weeks in 4 week incriments of taking calls with a more senior call taker just incase things got rough. Each 4 weeks they gave us more freedom and weaned us to be on our own. I'm glad we had such intense and thorough training. I'm glad we have proqa (even tho some hate it) and we basically follow a flow chart and don't have to freelance any questions. I'm almost at my year mark and even tho it's been rough this is the most I've ever enjoyed a job and don't see my self quiting anytime soon

My mom dispatched when I was 2yrs old and she did it for 30 years. I was in dispatch with her more times than I can count, definitely not a job for me but would really love to do it as well.
