@beastieandbone: This night-dweller only fully emerges after dark, silent and beautiful, stirring to feed on the life fluids of the host species it affixes to. Oh, think I was talking about the bat skull inside that gorgeous flower? Well, partially, yes. But also that flower, too. It’s the Queen of the Night, a vine that climbs larger plants like trees, and burrows into the host plant to tap into its xylem and phloem, the “sap veins”. It’s an endangered species that only blooms at night, and is native to areas of the US Southwest, Mexico, and into South America, where the megafauna species the Stock’s Vampire Bat once lived, making it a perfect and beautiful accompaniment to that little prehistoric blood-drinker. This is my latest illustration for my North American Megafauna Project, and it is part of my newest collection of art, inspired by dark academia, forestcore, and spooky species, perfect for fall!
