I’m new to you, but I think it’s pretty obvious who is to blame here! There are always scummy owners and property management companies that try to delay payments to renters, or decrease the amounts for sus reasons, but in the end, they’ll all try to find ways to avoid court. The only advice I would have given you is to know what your rights are, like when we moved out of a place years ago, they wanted to keep a large chunk of our security deposit for cleaning and painting. I had documented our pre-move-in conditions to show the same spackled spots on the walls that they claimed were our fault, so they had no claim to keep any funds. I knew from a friend in property management that they had 30 number of days to return our money, so when they started dragging their feet saying people who would take care of it were on vacations/just hired/thought it was taken care of by someone else, I included EVERYONE in a giant email and told them they were past the deadline and I had documentation of the issue that caused us to move (a whole other story), and that we would seek compensation for the deposit and the past issue in small claims court if we didn’t receive our promised funds. The check for the full amount was sent via certified mail 1 1/2 days later. At some point being nice just gets you taken advantage of, so it’s best to advocate for yourself like you’re doing now!

I your story is giving me PTSD. I stopped renting because my management company was so awful. I packed my stuff and moved back in with my mom until I can buy something that I own and can control. I know this is not an option for you but I truly hope everything works out and your compensated for the missed work because of this situation plus your moving deposit

The owner was not counting on you getting an attorney. he 100% technically has all of your money. The fee for the management company is a separate payable and has zero to do with your deposit. He knows this but was trying to make you an offer to go away. so insane!!!

They're just trying to wait you out and wear you down. don't give up. they owe you that money. the property management firm was acting as the owner's representative so like your attorney said, the dispute is between those 2, not with you. one thing to keep in mind with small claims court, even if a judge rules in your favor, it doesn't guarantee that you'll get your money. you may end up having to put a lien on the owner's property to get your refund. also do keep an eye on the demands for rent on the property because they could technically start eviction proceedings if they're petty enough and you will want to be able to respond to any filings immediately

Oh man, I was binch watching all your videos. I don’t have advice to offer, but I really hope this situation gets resolved very soon. I lived in LA for 7 years, moved back to Germany for 2 years, just came back to LA again three month ago. This is the reason I moved back to my old apartment complex, because the management is so good and on top of everything. It was too scary for me to move somewhere else. You never know what you’re getting into and then you’re stuck with the lease.
