Some of the hate is interesting tbh. Taylor never claims Travis saved her, she’d have been rich and topping charts without him. She says he saved her *heart* from the fate of Ophelia. She explains in many different ways that she had signed off from love & focused on building an empire. She says in other albums that men tortured her heart and references to a grave and death repeatedly. In essence she has created a metaphorical seperate self (her “heart”) that *is* unfortunately controlled by men (cause she’s straight lol). She was starting to think she’d have to lay that part of her self to rest because men had driven her to madness and she felt hopeless, without autonomy, in *this* version of herself. So yes, Travis saved her heart from the fate of Ophelia.

Also alot of people who are complaining have probably never been in a Shakespeare play only read them…..when acting Ophelia we are literally told to play her as desperate for someone to save her because when Shakespeare wrote her THE ONLY WAY TO BE TREATED BETTER WAS TO MARRY A GOOD MAN!!

the fate changes but the story doesn’t, the cage is just tied in a pretty bow now. the men in Ophelia’s life run it, she has no autonomy, and even though she in love, it was simply moving from the control of one man, to another. her dad was a horrible person, and hamlet was a crazy one, there is no version of this story that was going to end well. she was going to end up as one of the many housewife victims steeped in quiet misery because “the place of a woman was the home” her choosing not to get up after she fell, and singing herself to d**th, was HER CHOICE a last plea for one choice in her life that she gets to make on her own. so yeah she was saved, but doesn’t that re-write the point of ophelia. she saves HERSELF. why exist in misery when i can find peace. even in its in d**th

Yes and I understand that modernly we view this story through a lense of autonomy to herself which is a valid interpretation but I also don’t think it’s wrong to surmise that a healthy relationship that valued Ophelia as a person wouldnt have also saved her from a tragic end. I don’t understand people saying this song doesn’t capture her full character or shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the text.

It says the FATE— the highlights of her ending. Of couse her story do not resonate completely since they are different person, they parallel on the fate. It's metaphorical, you guys. Do not let your love of taylor's misery cloud the simplicty hahaha
