keep in mind he did everything because of just how much he cared about his kingdom. he sacrificed his children. his spawn. he sacrificed his love. just to protect his loyal followers. he knew the hollow knight would fail. but he couldn't handle anymore. another child. he knew what would happen. he cared too much. his devotion to his kingdom was his undoing. yet you can see that his efforts significant prolonged the life of the kingdom. god, what a wonderful character.
