@this_isgoth: 𝔊𝔬𝔱𝔥𝔦𝔠 𝔄𝔯𝔠𝔥𝔦𝔱𝔢𝔠𝔱𝔲𝔯𝔢 🕍 Gothic architecture emerged in France during the mid-12th century, flourishing until the 16th century across Europe. It was originally called Opus Francigenum (“French work”) and only later, during the Renaissance, was labeled “Gothic” as a pejorative term — though today it’s a symbol of mystery, beauty, and spiritual elevation. Characterized by pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses, this style sought to bring light and height to sacred spaces, reflecting a desire to connect the earthly with the divine. Its stained glass windows bathed cathedrals in otherworldly colors, creating spaces that felt both celestial and haunting. One of the earliest and most important architects was Abbot Suger, who oversaw the reconstruction of Saint-Denis Basilica (1135–1144) — often considered the first truly Gothic building. Later, architects like Jean d’Orbais (Reims Cathedral), Pierre de Montreuil (Notre-Dame de Paris), and William of Sens (Canterbury Cathedral) expanded and perfected the style across Europe. This architecture influenced the Gothic subculture centuries later (1970s–80s), inspiring its aesthetics: towering silhouettes, dark romanticism, and a fascination with ruins, cathedrals, and the beauty of decay. These medieval structures became both literal and symbolic spaces for modern gothic art, music, and fashion. #goth #gothic #gothicarchitecture
