One of the earliest and most important architects was Abbot Suger, who oversaw the reconstruction of Saint-Denis Basilica (1135–1144) — often considered the first truly Gothic building. Later, architects like Jean d’Orbais (Reims Cathedral), Pierre de Montreuil (Notre-Dame de Paris), and William of Sens (Canterbury Cathedral) expanded and perfected the style across Europe.
