It's going to help the shoulders but the continuous bending in the elbow is reducing the tension on your chest. Keep your elbows at a static angle (as best as you can) while going down and back up. the tension will remain the same and work the chest. When you bring your arms back up and straighten them, it puts the tension on your triceps. Nothing wrong with wanting to save the shoulders.
