What I suspect: Privileged people crave the kind of profound difficulties that the rest of us have, so in the absence of them they will create their own traumas and journeys. I think our DNA expects a certain amount of struggle, and when we don't get it because we're rich and powerful, we'll create it out lf whole cloth for ourselves

She was disappointed because she prioritised the destination instead of the journey. She remembers the 10 minutes at the peak instead of the days spent climbing.

For me adrenaline producing activities feel like anxiety and I've had more than enough anxiety in my life so that's a hard nope.

I think it's when people feel so safe that they become bored of safety and artificially get into dangerous situations.

It’s the “just to say I did it” for me. That’s not enough reward to risk my life. If an activity doesn’t involve some kind of connection I don’t want it

for me it's cave diving. There is no amount of adrenaline or dopamine in the world that would make that worth it in my eyes

Well, I could only speak for myself as a neurodivergent person who is neurodivergent due to CPTSD. Risk taking outdoor sports are a big part of what saved my life because I was so numbed out and disassociated due to the trauma that this risking death was the only way I could feel something. It also as it turns out, especially hiking was a sort of primitive form of EMDR. It also helped stop all of the noise in my brain because I couldn’t think about my intrusive thoughts and memories when I was fighting for my life on a rock face. being in nature’s peaceful for me because I at least know what the dangers really are. You can trust a coyote or a bear because you know what their natural behavior is and all you have to do is give them their space, but you can’t trust a human being because they can seem nice while trying to destroy you. I don’t understand people that do it just for the Instagram, it was never about that for me and that didn’t exist Until later in my life because Im middle aged. I don’t ski or climb or high clone trails or Kayak dangerous rivers just to say I did it, I did it because I had to. I couldn’t imagine another life. A lot of things that more mainstream people enjoy are completely meaningless to me like I can’t imagine why anyone would watch a football game, for example, I can’t imagine why anyone would want to go to a concert in a crowded hall full of other human beings, I can’t understand why people drink could use substances and watch TV. Their whole life.

I think it’s a colonial conquest mindset for a lot of people. I could appreciate the mountain without climbing it.

I don't even think it's an introvert/extrovert or neurotypical/neurodibergent divide. I think some people have a very low sense of fear, which makes the mental barrier of entry to these types of activities incredibly low

Skydiving is actually a completely different risk profile than the rest of these things. I have gone skydiving a few times, it is exhilarating and pretty low risk. Sure it feels high risk, but statistically it isn’t. 0.23 fatalities per 100,000 jumps in 2024. And aside from ☠️, injuries usually consist of twisting your ankle upon landing. Whereas Everest will almost guaranteed take something from you.

Finally! I’m not alone in thinking this - totally agree and understand the totally bafflement you are explaining. Why? Why would you want to do something that is so dangerous with nothing to show but to say ‘I can do that or I did that’. I would like to know as well if it’s neurodivergent or extrovert etc. I think neurodivergent people always have that…..but why? Why are you doing it and what’s the take ie what do you get from it? But yeah. Thanks for articulating what I’ve thought for years.

In hs we watched a documentary on climbing Everest, and I learned it took three months and all I could think about is how terrible it would be to have a period there.

Im AuDHD and I love adrenaline, but I would rather stick to Rollercoasters... skydiving I may do - but getting to Everest, spending thousands, having a serious risk of frostbite, having multiple day of torture... no thank you, would rather get into feratas - can do in few days, has safety, adrenaline and nice views.

I am autistic and I do it because I want to live life and push myself. I walked 420 miles across Spain and next walk is in the freezing cold gets down to -3 and that walk is 870 miles across mountains and all the way around wales. I do it because no one else does it I don’t want to live the same boring life everyone else does and it’s so I know I am a man that can get through anything. Started this because I lost my son and then my ex left me for someone else.
