@creativelyflailing: I still have a copy of this book and it is the most self-deprecating collection of humor I’ve ever seen. #trauma #deconstructing #jokes
I thought it was going to be a wordplay on Russian vs rushing. Like he was drinking his coffee down in 3 seconds flat.

interesting. looking at it as a metaphor is a new angle for me, but I agree it works! the joke is still relevant if you take it literally. I'm from post-soviet Ukraine, and for many years I DID drink my tea with the spoon still in the mug. 😅

Polish person here, I don't take the spoon out but it literally just falls to the side, HOW do you poke your eye with it?

oh I've heard this one as a child growing up in lithuania! also, there's another one where an undercover russian spy in NY gets found out by carrying a bouquet of flowers with blooms pointed down 😁

My head is spinning. Now I'm going to be obsessed with what things are keeping my one eye closed. Oh. Man.

There a third part to it: “I’m keeping both eyes open, what’s the problem now?” “ You took the spoon out of the mug and put it in your pocket”

That was amazingly insightful for a joke book. And the message has to hit at a turning point in my life too 🙄

I love this, and it reminds me of a fun fact I picked up from a friend who used to live in the Soviet Union. The French term bistro comes from the Russian word for quick, and it was incorporated into French culture after Napoleon’s Russian defeat.

This was delicious. Thank you. It reminded me of a late colleague who was from Romania. The jokes that he would tell from the perspective of a people under the thumb of the Soviet Union were unlike any other that I know. They were dark. They were hysterical. Thanks again..

I’m Polish and we know this joke - ii is also one of my favorites! My grandmother would always scoff me for behaving like a Russian, if I drank my tea with the spoon in it 😁

I was thinking the whole time that the punchline was going to be that they were just being French and he had only outed himself by assuming the attitude was in any way about him.
