@mira_is_psyched: Pop culture rehearses our politics, psychologically, and the comment sections on TLOAS have been an incredible case study on that front. #taylorswift #thelifeofashowgirl #ts12 #psychology #tloas

We aren’t a cult. We can have an opinion that an album is shallow and tone deaf

I shouldn’t have said “doesn’t quite land”. It doesn’t land. At all. First 3-4 tracks are valid bops, then it’s like a highway pileup (and lyrically indefensible, among many other issues I take with it). 🫶

THIS IS SO AMAZING!!!!! I truly think she's causing the discourse and infighting on PURPOSE! I think there's a larger plan! She loves to rile us up!

totally agree that you can disagree with a take on “your team” especially politically but this is art! taylor is sharing her art and NO artist is held to this standard except her. justin bieber has had 2 albums flop and silence! there is a lot to be said about importance of critique but also whose art we choose to dissect this way

I am not saying this merely in relation to to Swift, but the entirety of your message needs to be played in public squares on repeat. I feel like people really need to hear and integrate deeply into their consciousness.

One of my favorite bands came to a realization a few years ago: no matter what they put out, some part of their fan base would not like it & vocally complain online, which they obviously saw. They finally said, basically, we realize it’s impossible for us make everyone happy, so we’re just going to make the albums we want to make, and if someone doesn’t like it, too bad, maybe next time. Luckily, they’ve had enough success that they can do that, which must be incredibly freeing for an artist.

And to add to your point, art has always been and should be critiqued (thoughtfully). I’ve had people say horrible things to me in comment sections when I talk about how a certain metaphor or lyric she used wasn’t a good choice for xyz reason. Thoughtful critique, met by insults. That’s where we are.

Normative conformity - that's the reason so many of us are just now finding out that our parents, churches, beloved teachers & other leaders who taught us good values like "love thy neighbor" & "justice for all" are all actually deeply bigoted. They parroted the public narrative without believing it. But WE did. We internalized those principles, and now we're accused of 'taking things too seriously.' They didn't realize we weren't picking up on the intended (but unspoken) double-standard of "for us, not them." As children we didn't see their true feelings. But now that what's normative has changed, they feel comfortable unmasking. And it's devastating for us to find that's who they were all along.

Feels like these psychological mechanisms you described is the reason why it seems like fandoms in general (esp. fanfic/art spaces) became more toxic and confrontational in the last years. 1/

I’ve been screaming that the disagreements on the left are totally normal and in fact good, because we’re not all supposed to bully everyone into 100% agreement at n everything. It’s the refusal to challenge leadership on the right that is unnatural and forcing the left into the same position will leave us with different flavors of authoritarian government.
