Today, I was profoundly honoured to attend the African Chief of Defence Staff Summit 2025 here in Abuja. The theme, “Combating Contemporary Threats to Regional Peace and Security in Africa,” reseonates with me as is the most pressing imperative of our time. The summit served as a powerful statement to our collective will, as a continent, to confront the multifaceted security challenges that threaten our stability, development, and the very fabric of our societies. It was deeply encouraging to stand alongside our nation’s military leadership, esteemed colleagues from the National Assembly, and the distinguished Chiefs of Defence Staff from across Africa. The insightful keynote address by the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Her Excellency Ms. Amina Mohammed, set a decisive tone, underscoring the critical need for international partnership and sustained investment in peacekeeping and conflict prevention initiatives tailored to Africa’s unique system. We were graced by the presence of the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, who represented our President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and declared open the summit. Also present were other very important and notable dignitaries. The deliberations were both insightful and action-oriented. The first plenary session, expertly moderated by former ECOWAS Commission President, HE (Dr) Mohammed Ibn Chambas, on “Border Management and Regional Security in Africa,” was elevated by the passionate and intellectually robust keynote from the renowned Pan-Africanist, Professor Patrick Lumumba of Kenya. His address was a clarion call for stronger regional integration and smarter, technology-driven management of our porous borders, which are often exploited by terrorists, arms traffickers, and other criminal elements. The second session, “Combating Terrorism in Africa: The Imperative of Strategic Defence Collaboration,” cut to the very heart of our existential threat. The keynote presentation by our own General Leo Irabor (Rtd), CFR, was a masterclass in strategic thinking. He articulated, with precision, the non-negotiable necessity for deepened intelligence sharing, joint operational capacity, and synchronized military action across national boundaries. Terrorism is a transnational enemy, and our response must be equally transnational. As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence, I returned from this summit with renewed vigour and a clearer perspective. The National Assembly, particularly our Committee, has a cardinal role to play in transforming these strategic dialogues into tangible reality. We remain committed to providing the necessary legislative framework, ensuring robust budgetary allocation, and exercising our oversight functions to guarantee that our armed forces are equipped, motivated, and empowered to lead this charge. The path to a peaceful and secure Africa demands that we move beyond rhetoric. It demands collaboration, commitment, and courage. The Abuja Summit of 2025 has laid a significant marker. Now, we must build upon it. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Long live the African Union. — Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, PhD, GCON Chairman, Senate Committee on Defence, Federal Republic of Nigeria. #DefenceSummit2025 #SecureAfrica #RegionalSecurity #NationalAssembly #nigerianarmy🇳🇬🇳🇬
