In the middle of a word, x usually makes a [kz] or [gz] sound, which is what most people consider the "x" sound (think taxi or exact). the -ent ending on the other hand, is crazy. When found in a conjugated verb (third person plural), it is never prounounced: ils dansent, elles mangent, iels rigolent are pronounced exactly the same as danse, mange, and rigole.
