Every year, I follow my broad beans with brassicas. This is because broad beans fix nitrogen in the soil, and nitrogen promotes green leafy growth. Broad beans are in the legume family, and most legumes have a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen fixing bacteria. The nitrogen in the air we breathe is in an unusable form, but there are bacteria that can take nitrogen from the air and fix it into a usable nutrient for plants to take up in their roots. These microbes live in the little nodules that you can see on the roots of legume plants such as these broad bean roots. The bacteria fix the nitrogen for the plant, and the plant in return feeds the bacteria. When I remove my broad beans, I cut them off at ground level, leaving the roots in the soil to break down and feed my next rotation of crops. #selfsufficient #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #homestead #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden #veggarden #plants #igrewthis #ediblegarden #gardendesign #spreadsheets

I’m going to be showing you how to grow carrots, lettuce and dwarf french beans and how to make summer rolls with your harvests! If you’d like to join you’ll need the following: 🌱 A 1x1m square of prepared weed free ground OR 3 large pots that are 30cm wide. If you are growing in pots, you’ll also need compost - enough to fill the pots. 🌱 3 packs of seeds: one pack of dwarf french beans, one pack of lettuce and one pack of summer carrots - here are the varieties I am growing: 🥕 Carrot “Amsterdam Forcing” (you could choose any fast growing summer variety) 🥬 Lettuce “Crisp Mint” (you could choose any Romaine lettuce for crunch) 🫘 Dwarf French Bean “Purple Teepee” (you could choose any dwarf bean variety) I’ll be posting a video next week on how to sow your seeds, another one two weeks later on how to look after your crops while they grow, and a final one video on how to harvest your crops and make some delicious summer rolls! I hope you grow along with me 😊💚 Anyone can join Earthed’s nature skills platform for free, and take any number of our courses to deepen knowledge of food growing and restoration 💙🌱🌍💚 #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #homestead #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden #veggarden #plants #igrewthis #ediblegarden #gardendesign #spreadsheets
