When I signed up for my first Ironman, I basically only thought about the swim, bike and run. But here’s what I wish someone had told me before I started.👇 ✨ The 4th discipline is laundry. Between sweaty running clothes, pool gear and cycling bibs… you’ll swear your washing machine is training for its own Ironman. ✨ Food is expensive. Training 15–20 hours a week means your grocery bill doubles. It’s not only the gels for during training, but ALL your food needs increase. Suddenly you’re eating second dinners, buying snacks in bulk, and wondering if you should get sponsored by your local supermarket. ✨ More training = higher recovery needs. You can’t just squeeze in extra hours without paying the price. Your body will demand more sleep, naps, stretching,.. and those hours count too😅. ✨ The hidden hours. Nobody talks about the time spent around the sessions. Driving to the pool, cleaning your bike, prepping bottles, packing bags, planning routes… it’s basically a part-time job on top of the actual workouts. ✨ Setbacks are part of the deal. Fatigue, little injuries, missed sessions, self-doubt… they all happen. The trick is learning to roll with it, instead of thinking you’ve failed. Almost nobody’s training goes 100% well, it’s normal to have to adjust your plan. ✨ The cost of all the “small” things: everyone knows a good bike isn’t exactly cheap, but you forget about all the other things like a wetsuit, a helmet, good socks, cycling glasses,… I am very lucky I have sponsors for some of those things but still, it adds up 🤯 So if you’re starting this journey — know that Ironman training isn’t just about endurance in sport, it’s about endurance in life. 🫶 And yes, even with the chaos, it’s one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do.
