He was probably born and raised outside China. In Italy many kids of Chinese origins don't speak it so well because they were born and raised in Italy.

no fair. my grandfather is 1st generation Malaysian Chinese . he is from Putian, Fujian. but he no speaking Chinese as in command language (普通话）. he speaks the HengHua dialect. Same as my parents. I don't see an issue here. Very unbecoming of calling him a failure.

i meet one chinese, my cousin bf. so because my cousin is half chinese but don't speak chinese, i speak speak chinese with her bf. however, her bf can't even understand and i tell him, aren't he is chinese, and he said yes but he can't even speak Chinese because parents in house spoke mostly english and malay with him. so he only spoke those two languages 😂

I'm Indonesian Chinese but i can speak Mandarin (普通话）bhs Hokkian （福建闽南话）bhs Teochew（潮州话), bhs Konghu (广东粤语话）of course i can speak Indonesia as well. can speak multiple languages depen on environment.
