so true. I feel like with this shift or maybe beforr it Social Media has migrated away from being more Social (follow your friends and people you like, make new friends in the space) to being more Media (follow brands and celebrities, get served content an algorithm predicts you will like) and now culture and casual idea sharing are fading as we all get pushed into the centre ground. It's why I still keep tumblr, despite everything that sucks about it - at least I follow people then magically actually see their stuff!

absolutely true. I hate the shift to algorithmic social media being the default internet experience. take me back to the days of personal fan sites, blogs, message boards, chat rooms and first gen social media that allowed you to actually curate your own feed rather than having a machine decide who and what you want to see.

its not only social media its how streaming changed how tv shows are watched, when the viewer wants to and how many episodes the viewer wants to watch. people aren't used to not having a personalised media experience in general.

seriously this is it. we used to have to actively search for the things we wanted to see. now things get served to the new generation and they assume everyone else is seeing the same stuff but unless it goes super viral, we just arent.

The fact that psychoanalysts and psychotherapists have fought for a century to make it clear that in the majority of cases consuming "problematic" fiction is a harmless way to process conflicting and traumatic feelings, just for children to enter spaces where they shouldn't be and arbitrarily label strangers as criminals. There is content which could be created by someone who could potentially endorse the behaviour in real life, but those are extremely easy to tell apart from content created as coping by someone who's at least somewhat trained on the topic.

you've just connected two dots in my head I remember searching actively for bl, I wasn't spoon fed fandom, I was seeking artworks alone with only the words I knew and I was only introduced to things in the pov of an outsider getting to know a fandom space Now it's great to be able to access to so much fan works and original works without putting in the work but, as a result, the treatment of the artists is subpar and we know how the blatant bullying is going around in fandom spaces And frankly, being freaky online is dangerous now, like, sometimes I ask myself if writing the smut and posting it could be used against me
