code switching is real though. I used to go to a uni in Australia and they wouldn't understand me in my Singaporean accent, so I have to sound a bit like them so I dont have to repeat myself all the time. I've left Australia for years now, and when I do speak english to people who aren't Singaporean or Malaysian, my accent would naturally become a little bit Australian + neutral english.

Born and raised in sg, I watched a lot of MTV when I was young, got really influenced and started developing a natural American accent for some reason to a point locals asked if I was not local from the way I spoke my English. TV shows really do have an impact when you watch a lot or at least enough for it to make you adopt an accent

ok ok. hold up. soooo. i got a take on this. i once went on a trip and kept meeting people from europe and america so I spoke like proper english. but after 2 days when I met up with the SGreans, i took a while to switch back to singlish accent 😂

I mean, as the opposite (Singaporean who grew up overseas) I picked up the accent within like 6-12 months of living here because I got sick of the ridicule for my western accent😓…We always talk about how Singaporeans shouldn’t be ashamed of their accent and pretend they are smth they aren’t, but we should also stop shaming ppl for who they are (yes it does also PMO when born and raised Singaporean fake an American accent because it feels degrading af)

Cmon laa all this is step la.My Aunt lived in England for 30yrs.Came back still Singlish, of course when she speaks to European people and only if they speak English she will reply them articulately without an accent.

exactly!!! like why do you want to be perceived as being closer to whiteness 🤨🤨🤨 we've gotten to such a good place where we can code switch between singlish and standard english that we can communicate well but also find community through our language, WHY are so many people yearning to delete the latter
