I am a Canadian wildlife photographer trying to save half 1 million Barred Owls in the United States. My main account is @Theeowlqueen🇨🇦 They (the U.S. FWS) want the public to believe this is about “saving” Spotted Owls, but it has never truly been about owls. Now, 450,000 Barred Owls are marked for eradication, lured by recordings of their mate or young, only to be met with a bullet. The narrative is that one species is “invasive,” yet both Barred and Spotted Owls interbreed naturally, while Great Horned Owls prey on both and outnumber them combined. I’m team every owl, but no owl deserves what is currently begun for the Barred Owls! Owls are being turned into scapegoats while the real forces: logging, profit, and land control…move quietly in the background. I don’t have a PhD after my name, but I do have 15 years of fieldwork studying owls, nine years volunteering with wildlife rehab, and hands-on knowledge through working with falconers. That experience has taught me more than any textbook could. Here are some things most people don’t realize: • Only about one in three baby Barred Owls survives to adulthood. The biggest reasons are starvation and predation. Their main predators are raccoons raiding nests, and Great Horned Owls, who prey on both Barred and Spotted Owls. • Barred and Spotted Owls sometimes interbreed, producing hybrids known as “sparred owls.” That’s real, documented science. • If you go on eBird (the app I shared screenshots from), you’ll see maps that track where different owl species live. Barred and Spotted Owl populations show up differently, but when you look at Great Horned Owls, the entire map of the U.S. is purple. Their numbers are so strong and yes, they do kill both Barred and Spotted Owls, while also being double their population size. • And despite all the falconers and raptor programs and wildlife rescue centers I personally know that breed owls like Snowy Owls, Great Grey Owls, and Eurasian Eagle Owls, I don’t know of any who have tried breeding Spotted Owls out of all my contacts in Ontario & Quebec Canada. That tells me not all of the options have been fully explored when it comes to protecting them. So, for anyone in the comments trying to discredit me or suggest I don’t know what I’m talking about, I encourage you to look deeper. The information is there if you take the time to research it.
